Biography
In December of 2005, I was asked to write a review of a live show by the band Islands for I See Sound. I followed it up with a list of my top ten favorite albums of 2005 and a review of The Hold Steady's Separation Sunday. In January 2006, I wrote my first "short story review" for Two Gallants' When The Toll Tells. After March 2006, my writing voice was silenced.
After making my favorite albums of 2006 list, I wanted a place to post it. I also wanted to continue writing short story reviews. Thus, The Wheel's Still In Spin was created.
The Wheel's Still In Spin will not repeat the news announced on other blogs. There are enough sites out there already doing this. On this site, I will post reviews of new albums, recent live shows, and music related books and movies. I will also bring attention to new music by posting mp3 and video for some new releases and drawing attention to Cincinnati bands and bands playing festivals like SXSW and MPMF.
The posts on this site will include:
- Album reviews (as short stories) - an attempt to review an album with an original and unique voice (updated when appropriate).
- Live reviews - recapitulation of live performances and festival appearances (updated when appropriate).
- Book reviews - appraisal of music related literature (updated when appropriate).
- Movie reviews - evaluation of music related films (updated when appropriate).
- Lists of bests - lists of the best new releases each month and the annual best of list (posted at 11:59PM on the last day of each month).
- New releases - highlights some of the weekly releases with mp3 or videos (updated every Tuesday).
- "Better Than The Chili" - a weekly post showcasing a different band from the greater Cincinnati area (updated weekly).
Citybeat, Cincinnati's independent weekly entertainment magazine, honored The Wheel's Still In Spin as part of the Best Of Cincinnati 2008 for "Best Music Reviews On A Blog."
For those interested, the title for this blog comes from the Bob Dylan song "The Times They Are A-Changin'"
